Habanero Ginger Beergarita

Can I offer you a drink? I know, I know. It’s early. Okay, and it’s Monday… But in honor of Cinco de Mayo I thought it’d be fun to spice things up a bit! Today, I’ve teamed up with my amigos at Jose Cuervo to bring you this hottie, the ginger beer habanero margarita.

If you’ve never had a habanero margarita before, make this one. Like immediately––because spicy tequila paired with sweet ginger beer and a lick of sea salt creates the most incredible flavor trifecta your tastebuds could ever imagine. And because today is the only day you will not be judged for putting back a margarita on a Monday afternoon.

I did the math. All you need is three habanero peppers and a few hours soak-time to give your tequila serious kick, which means you can still put in a full day at the office and show up to your friend’s fiesta tonight with a bottle of spicy tequila in tow. Obviously the longer the peppers infuse the spicier it will be, but I promise you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the spice after just a few hours.

Allow me to impart a little habanero know-how before you get started though. These peppers are insanely hot. Touching them and then rubbing your eye or itching your nose will pretty much ruin your night––even after you’ve thoroughly washed your hands several times. I highly recommend wearing disposable gloves or throwing a couple of plastic baggies over your hands before handling these hotties.

Thankfully selecting the right tequila is far less complicated. I recommend choosing a quality silver tequila made from 100% agave, like Cuervo Tradicional. After all, they did invent the margarita! This stuff is especially good when served cold, so throw your tequila bottle in the freezer once those habaneros are done soaking.

Habanero-slicing aside, this 5-ingredient margarita is super easy to make. Just run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, flip it over into a pile of flaky sea salt, combine all of your ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and give it a stir. Pour over more ice and garnish with a slice of lime.

I promise this margarita is like none other. The crisp ginger beer and tangy lime juice give it the perfect amount of tang and sweetness without being the least bit syrupy. Just be prepared––the habanero-infused Cuervo will most certainly change the way your tastebuds think of tequila.

PS. A little tequila history lesson in honor of Cinco de Mayo!

What a great idea to use Maldon salt- even though it’s December- going to have to try this recipe soon!

I do have square ice cube trays, both small and big. I’ve heard bigger cubes melt slower which is good for slow-sipping drinks on the rocks, but I went with the smaller cubes for this drink. I’ll be honest though, it was so good the ice barely got the chance to melt before it was gone. :)
